Muduli Geodfrey, a 75 year old Male resident of Butokolo, Iganga district is beyond overjoyed as he shares his road to justice. ‘In 1974, I mortgaged my land at a fee of 10,000 shillings per year and later left the village without trace for a long period.
In 1985, my family called off the mortgage and my brother Nseko Faustine paid off the mortgage fee and started using the land’, the client narrates.
In 2018, he returned to his home and wanted to repossess his land but his brother insisted that he was now the rightful owner of the land. He reported the case to the clan leaders but they didn’t help. He later shared his problem with a friend, a past PLA client who referred him to PLA Iganga offices. The legal officer summoned the respondent for mediation and the two parties reached an agreement. The respondent had planted sugar cane to ¾ of the land, built a house on it and planted some trees, bananas and yams on the same. A memorandum of understanding was signed and it was agreed that the respondent was allowed to harvest the sugar cane planted up to December 2022 and the bananas up to December 2018 and that he will only take 3 trees that are on the clients land and that he will demolish the house constructed on the clients land. The respondent has since then demolished his house and the client has taken back possession of his land.
“I am very grateful to PLA for advancing its goal of providing free legal aid for poor and marginalized people and for enabling him to peacefully reconcile with his brother” Muduli
